CAPE CORAL: U.S. Senator Bill Nelson says the Consumer Products Safety Commission is failing homeowners dealing with defective Chinese drywall - and the agency's acting chair should be fired.

The senator was in Cape Coral Monday morning to talk about his plan for dealing with defective drywall.

Nelson’s news conference was held at a home on Deerfield Lake Court in the Coral Lakes neighborhood.

The couple living there says they’ve had to replace their air conditioning several times over the last year because of the defective drywall.

Chinese drywall is in thousands of homes across our area and is blamed for corroding copper wiring and air conditioning equipment.

Some residents also say the sulfur odor the drywall emits causes health problems, though experts have yet to prove that is the case

Nelson is calling for a massive recall of the product and a ban on imports of Chinese drywall.

Nelson also says it is his goal to get those with Chinese drywall in their home financial help to get it replaced.

He says the Consumer Product Safety Commission has the authority to impose penalties and seize the assets of companies who are responsible for bringing the drywall into the U.S

But the senator says CPSC acting chairman Nancy Nord is not doing her job - and says the Obama administration needs to replace her

“But the CPSC ought to exert their powers, now the problem is, you’ve got a chairman, Nancy Nord that just is not doing their job and the administration is going to have to replace her with somebody that will,” said Nelson.
